Are you In or Out of the Cabinet? Spice Rack Storage Debate!

There seem to be two schools of thought towards spice storage. One group maintains that it’s best for spices to be kept in lightproof, airtight containers in your cabinet. The other group knows this – but can’t resist the convenience of having spices on the counter and readily available.  The convenience outweighs the fact that sunlight and heat from the stove seriously compromises the quality of spices. Me, like Johnny Cash, I walk the line.  I like keeping my spices in the cupboard when I’m not cooking, but when I’m rattling the pots and pans I like to have all my seasoning options in front of me.

That’s why I love freestanding racks! From cabinet, to counter and back again. They’re perfect for commitment-phobes (like me) with small kitchens (like mine).  I also like a freestanding rack because it makes it easy to stay organized while cooking. Because, and I’m the first to admit it, sometimes things get a little hectic, spice bottles start getting crazy, the cinnamon rolls off the counter and under the refrigerator – I’ve said too much.

What do you think? Am I crazy – should I just pick a side? Leave a comment and make your case for the ultimate spice storage solution!

I agree with having spices easily on hand but prefer them not to take up valuable counter or cabinet space so i love my spice rack carousel which attaches below a cabinet and also measures the amounts to pour. I don’t even have to use measuring spoons!

I think that unless you’re a real serious cook, accessibilty to the spices outweighs the concerns of light and heat damage. I’d be hard pressed to tell the difference, so KISS, (keep it simple stupid)
